Botanicals for Stress

Stress-reducing botanicals and supplements.

If you are dealing with chronic stress of any kind, it is important to supplement and support the increased drain on your body.

There are a number of adaptogenic herbs that are generally well-indicated for stress. An herbalist can help you tailor this list more precisely, but these are generally indicated. Let's start with vitamins, and then we'll move to herbs.

If you are stressed out for any duration, it is a good idea to supplement b-vitamins. These vitamins will generally be referred to as a B-Complex, or B-Complex 100, where 100 refers to the number of milligrams of each component. It is a complex because there are a number of B-vitamins. These are important to nervous system health.

There are a number of adaptogenic herbs that are useful in combatting chronic stress. These include:

  • Rhodiola (rhodiola rosea)
  • Ashwagandha (withania somnifera)
  • Holy Basil (tulsi)
For specific experiences of stress in the heart, Hawthorn (Crataegus family) is extremely useful. Before you begin a program of herbal supplementation, make sure there are no interactions with medications that you are taking. Certain herbs should not be taken if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, so seek appropriate advice.
