There is a fascinating discussion, in Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk's book on trauma healing, The Body Keeps the Score, about theatre as a trauma healing modality. There are a variety of reasons, Polyvagally-speaking, why acting is likely to evoke the ventral vagal system, and certain kinds of theatre in particular. We know that attending to voice, and facial expression elicit the connection system, and there is something about working iwht a group of people on a play that is a uniquely meaningful experience. Be it organized impromptu over an afternoon, or rehearsed thoroughly, there is something magical about telling a story with others.
