In this 3-hour masterclass featuring Dr. Stephen Porges, Developer of the Polyvagal Theory, we will explore the implications of Polyvagal Theory for the future of medicine and mental health.

The Polyvagal Theory represents a dramatic re-conceptualization of the manner in which the Autonomic Nervous System mediates behavior. It lays out, in granular detail, the manners in which an embodied felt sense of safety or threat (neuroception) gives rise to either connection or distress responses, which shape and tune our internal milieu, our sense of self, what we feel and think, how we interpret the world around us, and how we behave. There are already a number of somatically-oriented trauma therapies that rely on insights from the Polyvagal Theory, and Dr. Porges and others have explored and continue to engage and expand clinical applications of the Theory. In this conversation, we’ll look at the profound ways that a deep understanding of the Polyvagal Theory is likely to re-shape medicine and mental health in the future, and how understanding physiological state is likely to lead to re-conceptualizing of diagnostic categories, conceptualization of dis-ease (both physical and mental health), and otherwise transform healing, both for patients, and for wellness practitioners.
