If modernity is a project founded on alienation, and our animating yearning is to find our way home, what is the nature of the home to which we are longing to return? We invite you to consider that the marrow of our bones yearns for a village.
Nostos- the yearning for home, at the center of the Homeric Odyssey, which forms the mythical template of what is known as the hero’s journey, is the attempt to return home from war. It could be read therefore as a document of the template to overcome post-traumatic stress. It demonstrates what is required to overcome the obstacles to returning to home and hearth, and yet...we would propose to you that its syntax is incomplete.
We yearn to come back into contact, through the body, with our full ensouledness, a heart that tells the mind what to do, and yet the original instructions of this awakened heart find their full expression only in the village. The individual is a fragment of something larger, designed to nest into and be ensphered by not merely family but village and Nature.
Our indigenous hearts seek to gather around the Original Fire. We seek to remember ways of being and knowing that center a collective enterprise of turning on the inward lights, yet one that does not take place simply on weekends, simply in ceremony, retreat, meditation, or on zoom–but one that rather weaves the rhythm of our days through the experience of kinship; of relatedness. We want to sing all my relations to the wind, the trees, the stars, and to our brothers and sisters, and then to share in the activities of daily living accompanying their stories. We yearn to live in a village. Not merely a sudden, a temporary, or a conditional village. But an ancestral village: the real thing.
Do we dare to dream of such beauty here in the endtimes, in a civilization intent on collapse, busy treating us as machines and the world as a mine to be extracted?
I propose to you that it is, in fact, not only the joyously, but the most soberly responsible thing to do. The cauldron of the real is showing us, fervently, that we cannot survive what is coming alone. Be it catastrophe or celebration, the human unit of proper flourishing is the village. This series of conversations, which takes place over 9 months, is a strand in the womb of villaging that we are weaving. Be therefore appropriately noticed. It could change your life.
