Night Hiking

{A Written Practice}

Night Hiking

Night x Hiking

I still remember an encounter, 25 years ago, on a trail near the ocean on a nearly moonless light, at nearly 1 am, with a very strange creature that turned out to be a horse and rider, not the monster we thought we were encountering. Hiking at night renders everything mysterious. It is a very good antidote to mundane days. The more moonlight there is, the easier it is to hike, and for some the more enjoyable.

There could have been a distinct practice here called 'Full Moon Hikes', as the energy of the full moon can cast shadows, and render a trail as vivid and clear as day. There is Night Hiking, Night Kayaking– a whole host of nature activities you can do at night...

There is a beauty and mystery to what birds you will encounter (night birds), what animals will be around, what insects.

When you are out there, take at least a few moments to grow still, and just to listen. To be out in nature, outdoors, at night, simply listening. Extremely restorative.
