The way we hold the stories of our lives– their narration, how we understand events, how we locate ourselves within them, how we make meaning from them–all of this complex interaction with narrative deeply shapes our experience of our lives.
As a practice, writing can be a way of grappling with story, received identity, agency, and the events that comprise our lives. Developing writerly craft – an understanding of scene as the building block of story, writerly voice, our own yearnings – helps us write about our experience in ways that work as story. As the stories of our lives become more clear, polished, and coherent – WE become more clear, polished, and coherent.

Whereas there are a handful of people we are working with engaged in literary projects of self-transformation, and whereas I would like to mentor (and am in fact mentoring) a handful of you, and whereas there are some elements of craft that are going to be universally required by you as tools in order to make your literary undertaking proceed more smoothly, I am considering teaching a craft of writing seminar for you all this summer. This webinar is exploratory preparation for that undertaking.
