Mountaineering

{A Written Practice}

Mountaineering

There is a certain kind of person who wants to climb a mountain.

Is it possible that each of us has not merely a spirit animal, but a spirit landscape?

A kind of place– ocean, forest, desert, beach, tundra, glacier, mountain– that sings to us? That visits us in our dreams? The speaks to us of things that we need to remember, need to understand?

Are mountains that place for you? Does your heart quicken at the thought of it? Do the mountains call you?

Do your legs yearn to climb? Do you revel in the view from the vista? Is there something about pulling yourself up, rising, that speaks to some elemental calculation in your soul?

Can you be a mountaineer, in spirit, before you’ve ever summited a peak? How would you discover if the mountain is the place you need to go to find restoration?

Who taught us this?

Perhaps the fact that mountains exist?
