Healthy Relationships

A foundation of well-being

Healthy Relationships are one of Dr. Nadine Burke Harris' 6 factors of resilience. Particularly if we have experienced early adversity, the cultivation of safe, healthy, reciprocal relationships is a key to well-being.

In the video above, we speak deeply and candidly with Dr. David Mars, PhD, a transformative couples therapist, about what is means to create safe inter-personal relationships that create the opportunity for us to deepen into a felt sense of safety, connection, and the visceral experience of love. Dr. Mars' work is deeply influenced by mindfulness, attachment-based therapies, and the Polyvagal theory.

Related Practices:

This is really related to any practice that involves connection with others. On the practices home menu, see Connect to Others. This complements work on Relational Mindfulness, Reflective Listening, and Common Ways of Disconnecting. Dr. Mars refers to the concept of Core Neurobiological Self. He refers to the Polyvagal Theory, which you can learn about in summary through A Brief Illustrated Guide to Polyvagal Theory, or in depth through our film about the Polyvagal Theory: The Science of Safety. To learn more about Self-Regulation in the context of relationship, see The Daisy Model of Self Regulation with Letha Marchetti OTR/L, C/NDT, SEP. For more about the soothing power of touch, see Turning Your Nervous System into an Ally with Dr. Jeff Rockwell, DC, MA, DOMP.

Who taught us this?

This is a conversation with Dr. David Mars, PhD. David is a transformational couples therapist. He has a doctorate in Psychology (PhD), and is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT). He directs the Center for Transformative Therapies, and is adjunct faculty at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He has been developing these methods for over forty years.

Who taught us this?

We learned this from many people, and it has become one of the signature elements of our work, which looks to understand the neurophysiological drivers of mental momentum in the body. This unites strands of indigenous awareness with the Polyvagal Theory, marrying ancient ancestral awareness practices with the cutting-edge of neurophysiology
